Why Does the Water Level in My Pool Drop in Winter?

If you notice that your pool’s water level drops more than expected during the winter, it does not always mean there is a serious problem, but it is a sign you should not ignore. Cold weather, seasonal changes, and certain technical issues can cause this drop. The key is to identify the cause and act quickly to prevent structural damage or excessive water waste.

Evaporation in Cold Weather

While it is more common in summer, evaporation also happens in winter, especially on dry and windy days. The contrast between water temperature and air temperature can accelerate this process.

Solution: Use a pool cover or tarp. This reduces evaporation and helps maintain the water temperature.

Hidden Leaks

If the water level in my pool in winter consistently drops significantly, there may be a leak. Even small leaks can disrupt chemical balance and damage the structure over time.

Solution: Perform the bucket test to detect leaks. If the test is positive, call a leak detection specialist.

Valve and Pipe Failures

Cold weather can cause materials to contract, affecting seals or connections and leading to leaks in the filtration system.

Solution: Visually inspect valves and pipes, and schedule preventive maintenance before the cold season.

Insufficient Winter Maintenance

Reducing maintenance in winter can lead to chemical and structural problems, which in turn forces you to replace more water than usual.

Solution: Check pH and chlorine levels regularly, even if you are not using the pool, and keep the filtration system running for a few hours a day.

If the water level in my pool in winter drops more than normal, do not ignore it. It could be due to evaporation, technical failures, or leaks. Identifying the cause early will save you money, protect the structure, and keep your pool ready for the next season.
